About the Program
Why the Program Matters
Diabetes and weight gain are rising at unprecedented rates among adolescents. The obesity rate alone has quadrupled in the last 30 years. As a result, 1 of every 3 adolescents between the ages of 6 and 19 are overweight or obese. Furthermore, childhood obesity is leading to diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, arthritis, sleep apnea, and depression. Consequently, the epidemic is costing millions in healthcare dollars. Obesity-related healthcare costs account for nearly 21% or $190 billion of the healthcare spend and the number is rising. Indiana, one of the nation’s most unhealthy states (41st!), spends $3.5 billion of that number. Energy Krazed is committed to reversing this trend by empowering Indiana’s youth to take charge of their health and well-being.
How the Program Works
Energy Krazed is a non-profit 501c3 organization developing fun, relevant, educational, and interactive programs that empower teens to take charge of their minds, bodies, and ultimately their futures. The Energy Krazed approach is flexible, person-centered, evidence-based, and collaborative. Our programs increase the quality of life of young Hoosiers by teaching the importance of nutrition, physical and mental health, and mindfulness through a collaboration of students, parents, healthcare professionals, educators, and the community.
Energy Krazed is supporting Indiana youth in two ways:
- Teens can be referred into a program where a team of professionals and clinicians work with them one-on-one to help them fight obesity and change their lives.
- High schools can add our school-based program to their curriculum in which students learn how to manage stress, increase happiness, and lead healthier lives. Nutrition, physical activity, and mindfulness lessons are fun and easy to understand and remember.
How you can help the Foundation support Energy Krazed:
- Refer a school or a teen to the program
- Donate to help us fund our programs
- Volunteer your time to help
In 2015, a handful of health-focused individuals came together to assist in the energizingHoosier healthcare. In 2016, FCHS provided a $10,000 grant that allowed the newly created 501c3, Energy Krazed, to advance the innovative initiatives they have branded asRight Mind, Right Meals, Right Moves. Their mission is to be a catalyst for change by driving superior health habits in our local youth and their families resulting in an enhanced health status ranking of our community.
Countless research studies tie the cause of life-threatening diseases to nutrition and lifestyle. Nutrition, mindfulness, and exercise are well-documented in numerous medical publications for their recognized effectiveness in disease recovery. Despite these innumerable studies, most of the public is unaware of the signification connection that proper diet, positive thinking, and exercise have with life-threatening disease conditions. Our local community is still largely reliant on an expensive and largely ineffective medical system. The current healthcare delivery system emphasizes the use of expensive tests and medications that unfortunately fail to fully address and correct the poor nutrition and lifestyle habits that are poisoning Marion and surrounding counties – that is the gap Energy Krazed is trying to fill.
